Several years ago, I was introduced to an audience of Trust Officers as someone who actually understands and likes to do this "stuff". The stuff my host referred to, as you would know, is making sense of the stacks of medical bills, claim records, dun letters, premium notices, and all of the other records your clients send to you relative to their medical expenses. Even when you haven't agreed to manage their medical expenses or claims, you're compelled to help them knowing that health care costs must be controlled in order to conserve their assets.

I encountered similar requests for help during the 26 years I managed hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes. During those years, even with my education and specialized skills, it was a challenge to ensure the business of healthcare remained profitable. There were daily reminders our patients weren't fairing as well but there was never enough time or money in the budgets to help so many patients overcome so many problems with insurance claims or manage financial chaos resulting from chronic or acute illness.

It became a constant frustration knowing how easily or quickly I, or another professional with my training, could resolve the problems theses patients faced. Withe the advent and complexity of Medicare, it became even more apparent how ill quipped the untrained professional was to meet the challenge. After all, if the big industries of medicine and health insurers, with all of their resources, were struggling with the ever changing and increasingly complex payor systems, the patients - many of them elderly or incapacitated-- could not be expected to. MBRS (Medical Benefits Recovery Services) was born in 1989 out of that frustration.

In 1990, we became acquainted with another group of professionals who shared our commitment to protect the individual... the Trust Officers. They, like their clients, quickly realized the value of having an advocated experienced in medical management.
